High School Youth

High school is a time of maturing independence, exploring, gaining new skills, and bonding with peers and adults.  UU Asheville nurtures our teenagers’ growth and spirituality through relationships and community building, Sunday programs, and other  special events and opportunities, including an annual youth trip. Our  Coming of Age  and  YRUU  youth groups both meet on Sunday mornings during the 11:15 worship service as well as at other times throughout the year. Read more about both groups below.

Coming of Age

This UU rite of passage year offers 9th-10th graders a deep exploration of their beliefs, identity, values, and spirituality. At the end of the year, each teen creates a credo project to represent that at this stage in their life. These high schoolers journey in close community with peers, adult facilitators and mentors on Sundays, at retreats and other special events throughout the year. This special program fosters self reflection and confidence, affirms their passage out of childhood, and helps build a stronger connection to our church and greater UU community.

YRUU
(= Young Religious Unitarian Universalists and
“Why are you YOU?”)

Our 9th-12th grade high school youth group engages in enriching and nourishing activities to support teens’ spiritual and personal development. In this ever-changing world and challenging time of life as a teenager, our youth group offers a bedrock community where belonging, inclusivity, and meaning matter. “Always a chalice, always a check-in…” plus UU exploration through conversation, spiritual practice, play, action, service, crafting a youth-led worship service, and an immersive trip are all part of the year together. Fostering youth leadership is part of our ministry too! We also work to integrate our youth into the larger congregational body of service and play.
